Large-Format Tile Bathroom in Boerne

Freestanding soaking tub beside wall-hung toilet with large-format beige wall tile in Boerne bathroom

This bathroom in a Boerne home was tiled throughout in large-format beige porcelain, covering the full walls from floor to ceiling. The tile was installed in a stacked horizontal pattern, with the grout joints aligned both horizontally and vertically to create a clean grid effect. Large-format tiles on walls require a polymer-modified thinset with good non-sag properties to hold the tile in place during cure without slipping.

The tile installation here worked around a wall-hung toilet carrier, which requires precise cuts to fit the tile around the carrier frame cleanly before the toilet is mounted. The frameless shower enclosure was installed after tile work was complete, and the tile runs continuously behind the glass for a seamless appearance.

What We Did

  1. Installed cement backer board throughout and applied waterproofing membrane in the shower and tub zones
  2. Established level lines and planned tile layout to align horizontal joints across all walls
  3. Set large-format tiles using non-sag thinset with back-buttering, working in sections to allow proper support
  4. Grouted with light gray unsanded grout and caulked all inside corners and change-of-plane transitions

Inside corners in tile work are caulked, not grouted, to allow the slight movement that occurs between adjacent walls without cracking the joint.
