Kitchen Marble Backsplash in Fair Oaks Ranch
This kitchen backsplash in a Fair Oaks Ranch home used gray marble tile installed vertically rather than in the conventional horizontal orientation. The vertical installation required planning the tile layout so the grout joints land symmetrically on either side of the window, with full tiles flanking the window opening on both sides.
Gray marble is a natural stone and is more porous than porcelain, so we used white thinset to prevent any adhesive color from showing through the lighter veining in the tile. After installation, the tile and grout were sealed with a penetrating stone sealer to protect the surface from kitchen grease and moisture. The countertop-to-tile joint was finished with a silicone caulk rather than grout to accommodate the slight movement between the countertop and wall.

What We Did
- Planned vertical layout to center the field symmetrically around the window and place full tiles at the window flanks
- Set marble tile vertically using white polymer thinset with full back-buttering
- Grouted with matching gray unsanded grout; caulked the countertop joint with matching silicone
- Applied penetrating stone sealer after full grout cure to protect the natural stone surface
Changing the tile orientation from horizontal to vertical on a backsplash is a simple choice that shifts the visual character of a kitchen significantly.
